What data the AdminSTB agent collects

The agent is installed on devices that sit in subscribers' homes, hotel rooms and shops. That is why we want you to know, precisely, what information leaves each box and what it is used for.

Summary

Each device running the agent sends a technical report every 15 minutes to your dashboard. It is data about the device and its network, not about the content being watched. Screenshots are only taken when someone requests them from the dashboard.

What is collected and what for

This is the complete list of what each device reports, grouped by category.

CategoryWhat dataWhat for
Device identificationAndroid ID, serial number, MAC addresses (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth) and agent version. To tell each box apart in your fleet and keep them from overwriting each other.
HardwareBrand, model and manufacturer, Android version and security patch, firmware fingerprint, CPU, memory, storage, resolution, codecs, DRM and HDR.To know what device you have and what it can play.
StatusCPU and memory use, disk space, temperature, uptime, ping latency and warnings about missing permissions. To detect devices with problems before the complaint.
NetworkConnection type, Wi-Fi network name (SSID), band, signal strength, local IP and public IP.To diagnose drops and poor video quality.
Approximate locationCalculated on the server from the public IP, using a local database. No GPS coordinates are sent.To see roughly where each box is.
AppsList of installed apps (package, version, status, type and install source), foreground app name, and per-app network and CPU usage. To detect unwanted apps, measure usage and manage apps. Per-app CPU usage is only available on devices with root or Shizuku.
Peripherals and displayBluetooth state, remote control battery, audio outputs and the name of the TV connected over HDMI (EDID).Proactive maintenance and knowing which TV is connected.
Device securityWhether it has root, whether the firmware uses Android's public test keys, active accessibility services, device administrators, default launcher and whether the system partition is writable. To detect software that may affect the device.
ScreenshotsOnly when requested from the dashboard. The most recent ones are kept, up to 20 per device. To see what the user sees.
Command outputThe result of the commands the operator runs remotely. To show you the result in the dashboard.

What is not collected

Neither of the two apps (the agent and its companion, Guardian) declares permissions for camera, microphone, contacts, SMS, call log or access to the user's files. The agent reports the name of the app in the foreground, not the content being played. It does not send GPS coordinates: the approximate location comes from the public IP.

Which permissions it uses and why

PermissionWhat it is used for
Location (precise, approximate and background)Android requires these permissions to let an app read the Wi-Fi network name. The agent does not use them to obtain coordinates.
Usage statisticsTo know which app is in the foreground and how much each one consumes.
Query all packagesTo build the installed apps inventory.
Install, uninstall and force-stop appsApp management and updates. Granted automatically only if the agent is a system app.
RebootRemote reboot.
Read the screen bufferScreenshots.
Draw over other appsFull-screen messages, such as reminders or notices.
BluetoothBluetooth state and remote control battery.
Start at bootTo resume monitoring after a reboot.
Internet and network stateTo send the reports to the dashboard.

Guardian, the companion app, uses a subset: internet, network state, start at boot, install and uninstall packages, and secure settings, in order to update and maintain the agent.

Who can see this data

If your devices are in third-party homes or premises

When the boxes are in a subscriber's home or a guest's room, it is a good idea to tell those people what is collected. This page can serve as a starting point. It is not legal advice: for your obligations, consult a professional in your country.
